Character Creation
Step 1: Character Concept
Your character’s concept should both guide the choices you make during character creation and give you fertile ground for roleplaying at the game table. Do you want to be a fast, agile shooter, a brute with a sword, or a mysterious wizard with a book full of forbidden lore? Your choices are limitless.
Turn your concept into a one-line descriptive sentence that embodies your character.
name is a/n adjective origin race class who something interesting and something good at but something hindering.
Some of these things you will fill in later in this process.
What’s this nonsense?
A one-liner should briefly describe your character, capturing their essence succinctly. This gives you an excellent tool for introducing your character and a valuable resource for making roleplaying decisions at the table.
Step 2: Origin
Arcanist. The spark of magic flares inside you, will you fan that flame or let it burn out? Dancer. The Dance lives within you, the shimmer of life or the shadow of ending. [you must be lawful or chaotic] Heroic. You are destined for greatness, in this life, or the next. [nothing supernatural comes from this choice] Luminal. You are a luminal. A creature of chaos, life and beginnings. [you must be chaotic] Pyrric. You are a member of the Pyrric Order, a militant priesthood of Syvren that seeks purification through ordeal, holding that true faith is proven in fire and in loss. Umbral. You are an umbral. A creature of law, death, and endings. [you must be lawful] Veiled. In this time of trouble, when all things come again, things long forgotten stir within you. Voidweaver. The shadow lurks within you but will you control it or shall it devour you?
What is an origin?
Your character’s origin reveals something special about them, something unusual. It makes them unlike other characters and grants access to special things such as exotic races and Path Feats.
Step 3: Species
All Veylantia characters are human unless you’ve chosen an origin that opens access to an exotic species such as the luminals or umbrals.
Step 4: Class
Only a subset of classes and subclasses are available for Veylantia characters. As a rule of thumb, the classes you may choose must be martial classes such as the Fighter, Monk, and Rogue or the non-magical Ranger variant. Subclasses must not be magical in nature.
Any class or subclass with a spell-list is not available for selection.
Any class or subclass that “feels” magical, is not available. If in doubt, consult your DM.
No Magic?
Characters in Veylantia will end up being an amalgamation of two classes. Magical abilities and class features open up as your character levels up via Path Feats.
Ability Scores
Your level character begins with the standard ability scores array:
15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
Random rolling? Point buy?
No, you cannot generate ability scores by rolling 4d6. I remember those days too, it’s a fond memory. Let’s keep it a memory.
Yes, you can use the variant rule to customize your ability scores via point-buy. You get 27 points. Go wild.
Step 6: Background
Your Veylantia character has the option of having two backgrounds which you combine into a consolidated set of benefits.
Choose your two backgrounds.
- Select a standard background, such as Acolyte or Criminal from the core rulebooks.
- Select a Veyantia-specific background from this site. These are typically aligned with your country of origin such as Braxylian or Strykaran.
Merge your two backgrounds as follows:
- Background. Record your combined backgrounds on your character sheet by appending your Veylantian background to your standard background. For instance, you are a Braxylian Acolyte or a Strykaran Criminal.
- Skill Proficiencies. Choose any two skill proficiencies from among the four choices found on your two backgrounds.
- Tool Proficiencies. Choose the tool proficiencies provided by your standard background or your Veylantian background, but not both.
- Languages. Use your Veylantia background languages.
- Equipment. Use your Veylantia background equipment.
- Feature. Choose either the Feature from the standard background or your Veylantian background.
- Additional Bonuses. Gain additional bonuses provided by either background, such as the ability score boosts, weapon proficiencies and armor proficiencies found on Veylantian backgrounds.
- Suggested Characteristics. Choose your preferred characteristics from either background, or make up your own!
No Veylantia Background?
If you do not choose a Veylantian background, you need to make the following changes to your background.
- Replace any gold awarded with a like amount of silver. For instance, the Acolyte background gives 15 gp, but you actually record 15 sp.
- Choose a language from those available in Veylanta.
- Add: Ability Score Boosts. +2 to any one ability score and +1 to any other ability score
Step 7: Extra Goodies
Your Veylantia character gets some additional extras at level 1 that standard characters do not. These include:
- Increase your maximum hit points by 20.
- Increase your Hit Dice by 4.
- Select a 1st-level feat. You gain an additional bonus feat at levels 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20.
- Set your Maximum Wounds to 3 + your Constitution modifier.
That’s a lot of stuff!
It’s true, your Veylantia character will be significantly more powerful than a typical character of the same level. That’s intentional.
