Mariselle
The Duchy of Mariselle, Gallance’s western province, has been the hereditary domain of House Virelais since the age when Gallance was still known as Caeldoria. During the upheaval that followed the empire’s collapse and the founding of the Kingdom of the Marches, Rémi Virelais—later remembered as the Breakwater Duke—threw his support behind Gallan Corvinus. In recognition of that alliance, Gallan confirmed House Virelais as Dukes of Mariselle, granting them permanent stewardship over the western coast and the mouths of the great rivers that fed the young kingdom.
Mariselle is vital to Gallance’s strength and wealth. Its ports command sea trade and river traffic alike, drawing revenue from tariffs, shipyards, fisheries, saltworks, and coastal vineyards. The province is also known for prestige crafts—silver filigree and maritime ornamentation prized across the realm—and for the hardened coastal defenses that guard Gallance’s western approaches and control passage along the Arnelle. Chalk cliffs and wind-scoured headlands give way to sheltered coves and rolling green inland hills, still traced by old Valorian roads, while a chain of forts stands watch along the coast.
